RENFE, ADIF, Caf and Spanish Railways Foundation ffa involved in a European project that has as main objective research and demonstrate the feasibility of an integrated management system that allows the use of sustainable energy and optimized in major European rail systems. The research consortium devoted the next three years to pursue this ambitious challenge.
The MERLIN project, whose original English name stands for "Sustainable and intelligent management of energy for smarter railway systems ffa in Europe: an integrated approach Optimisation", started last October funded by the European Commission in the fifth round of the Seventh transport ffa Marco.

During the 17th and April 18 have gathered at the headquarters of the Spanish Railways Foundation, where meetings were held in the first framed project work packages that address the specifications of the railway network, the architecture for the intelligent energy use and definition of scenarios.
To achieve ffa its main objective, MERLIN will provide an integrated approach that includes multiple elements optimization, forecasting scenarios dynamics of supply and demand and cost considerations to support operational decisions that lead to intelligent power management and profitable resource through:
improvements in railway network design and distribution electrical systems and their interfaces with the public a better understanding of the influence on the energy demand of operations and operating ffa procedures ffa of the different elements of the rail system identifying technologies to optimize the use of energy developing specifications for an integrated architecture for power optimization in the design and operation of networks identifying and defining and real operating scenarios suitable for railway intelligent power management development of strategic tools for decision-making in those scenarios based on the architecture of MERLIN developing a practical energy optimization integrated approach ffa for evaluation and analysis collaboration and support to European standardization process through the publication of Technical Recommendations arising from the results of the project MERLIN
